NSDL
is an initiative of the National
Science Foundation (NSF) for a National Science
Digital Library. Its objective is to establish
an integrated digital library serving the collective needs
of the broad STEM* educational community, i.e., learners and
educators at all levels, i.e., "from K to Gray,"
by providing a network of learning resources and environments.
NSDL is envisaged to be a digital learning place that encourages
and supports users in their efforts to create, discover, explore,
and interact with digital resources that support teaching
and learning in STEM education. Physically, the NSDL consists
of a federation of digital libraries and collections in all
aspects of STEM. Collaboration among the libraries is facilitated
by a Core Integration System (CIS) that will provide the governance
and guidance as well as the technologies and services for
interoperability, communication, and collections management.
For
more information on the visions and plans of the NSDL, read
"Pathways
to Progress: Visions and Plans for Developing the NSDL, March
20, 2001." Additional information on the development
activities and issues of NSDL is available at its
Communication Portal.
