  Simulation - Approach to Risk Analysis in Coal Mining

  Traditional mine planning based on block models built with interpolation techniques such as kriging does not take into account the uncertainty associated with the estimates. These models are inadequate for short-range mine planning. In contrast, conditionally simulated models reproduce the actual variability (histogram) and spatial continuity (variogram) of the attributes of interest. Conditional simulation can be used to address the problem of measuring the uncertainty associated with an estimate. This paper outlines how the sequential Gaussian conditional simulation algorithm can be used to assess uncertainty of grade estimates and also illustrates how simulated models can be incorporated into mine planning and scheduling. A case study demonstrates the efficiency of the method in assessing risk associated with geological and engineering variables.

Title:
  Geostatistics and the Polygonal Method: A Re-examination

  The main advantage of geostatistics is the fact that it allows the quantification of errors for any spatial estimate. This estimation error can be used for optimizing additional sampling efford, for classification of reserves or for analyzing the propagation of error during spatial GIS-operations. Geostatistical public domain software packages exist which offer standard and advanced kriging methods for local and global reserve estimation, but nothing comparable for the global estimation error. But confidence limits for the global mean are the basis for reserve classification: Along the horizontal axes of the well known McKelvey Box reserves are ordered according to decreasing geologic assurance of existence whereas the other axis shows the economic feasibility of their recovery. In this paper a proposal is made which combines ideas from the very beginning of geostatistics and objective methods for estimating sampling accuracy using the unique tessellation of a 2D-domain by Voronoi polygons. A Visual Basic program is presented which demonstrates the capability of this approach with regard to global reserve estimation and improved sampling design in environmental research.

  Effective mineral exploration programs maximize the benefit of appropriate technologies in order to increase cost effectiveness by optimizing the use of drilling, reducing risks, and increasing the speed of discovery. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate potential cost effectiveness by showing how much information can be obtained about a deposit by inverting surface geophysical data alone. The only other information needed is estimates of the physical properties of the various rock types in the area. Geologic information is only used as a measure of success of the inversions performed.

  Automation of an Underground Mining Vehicle using Reactive Navigation and Opportunistic Localization

  This paper describes the implementation of an autonomous navigation system onto a 30 tonne Load-Haul-Dump truck. The control architecture is based on a robust reactive wall-following behaviour. To make it purposeful we provide driving hints derived from an approximate nodal-map. For most of the time, the vehicle is driven with weak localization (odometry). This need only be improved at intersections where decisions must be made ??technique we refer to as opportunistic localization. The truck has achieved full-speed autonomous operation at an artificial test mine, and subsequently, at a operational underground mine.

We also highlight some of the important practical issues associated with the deployment of intelligent processing systems in coal mining contexts.
