Digital Library Network for Engineering and Technology (DLNET)

Project Description | Mission Objectives | Partners | Project Team

Project Description
DLNET is a project funded by the National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Digital Library (NSDL) initiative of the National Science Foundation under grant DUE-0085849. It is a collaborative effort of four institutions: American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE), Iowa State University (ISU) and Virginia Tech (VATECH). The development effort of DLNET will draw from the considerable experience of the faculty and digital library staff of the collaborating institutions. IEEE will contribute its manpower and link its own ongoing web-based lifelong learning effort (IEEE ICET) to this DLNET initiative. ASEE will assist in involving other institutions and associations and focus on the dissemination of information about this enterprise through its course distribution platform (ASEE LearnOn). Iowa State University will contribute its expertise and interests in the areas of web-based course module development and the creation of standardized templates needed to facilitate content posting being implemented at PowerLearn. The very active involvement of IEEE and ASEE is expected to bring additional resources to the project because it will build on extensive lifelong distance learning activities currently funded by these partners. Moreover, their participation and allowing both the IEEE and ASEE portals to be gateways for DLNET will ensure user confidence and early buy-in from a large user group of engineers and technologists.

The Alexandria Research Institution (ARI) of Virginia Tech will manage the project providing the necessary support to integrate the inputs from participating institutions as well as from the Digital Library and Archives and the Educational Technologies Group at the University.

Mission Objectives
...to offer a roadmap, including implementation strategies and building blocks, of a Digital Library Network for Engineering and Technology (DLNET) that will assist in the lifelong learning of engineering faculty and students, practicing engineers and technical professionals.

DLNET is one of the projects under the "Collections" aspect of the NSDL program. In this regard, DLNET plans to develop a platform for hosting engineering and technology related content targeted at the practicing engineer and technologist. The platform will include tools for collecting reviewing, validating and cataloguing new materials, and provide a portal through which contents can be both viewed and accessed. The portal will also provide a gateway to education and research materials published by universities and professional associations in the various engineering disciplines including the IEEE and ASEE. More importantly, DLNET will serve as a partner in the federation of digital libraries under NSDL.
