Submitting
an Actual Learning Resource | On Copyrights
| Submitting a URL Link
Welcome
to DLNET. As a contributor, you can submit 'learning objects' in all fields
of engineering and technology so as to make them available to the world
of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and
profession. A detail description of what constitutes DLNET Learning Objects
is given in our Collections
Scope document.
Submissions
to DLNET can be in the form of:
-
An actual learning resource in its electronic format, or
-
A URL address pointing to the learning resource located in its parent
repository.
In
both cases, you will be requested to provide information or 'metadata'
about the resource you are contributing. Please
note that to contribute, you must first register
at DLNET by filling out the complete form and providing at least one reference
person and your areas of interest.

SUBMITTING AN ACTUAL LEARNING RESOURCE
The learning resource you intend to submit must first be processed
into a package that will enable its efficient aggregation, management,
distribution and utilization by DLNET or any learning management
system. A Learning Object Packaging Tool has been
prepared by DLNET for this purpose. It is based on a widely-accepted
standard of creating a packaged interchange file (PIF) suitable
for delivery of structured instructional content over the web as
shown below. The PIF is essentially a zipped folder containing the
actual resources and a manifest file with information about the
resource, i.e., metadata, and its organization. Once the
Tool converts your resource into a PIF consisting of the 'Learning
Object,' it is ready for uploading to DLNET.

A
three-step process to submitting an actual learning resource is
summarized below:

Download
DLNET Learning
Object Packaging Tool
This
is a java-based tool designed for packaging learning resources
into DLNET Learning Objects. A windows version is available
for download from the DLNET website. The tool requires
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.3 or higher to run.
JRE can be downloaded from Sun's
Java site. For more details on the tool, please refer
to the Tool Guidelines document.

Process
the learning resource using the Tool
The
tool will assist you in creating metadata as well as validating
and packaging the learning resource in a learning object.
The process is based on IMS/IEEE
Specifications for Learning Object Metadata and Content Packaging.
A step-by-step procedure on how to use the tool is provided
in the Tool Guidelines document as well as within the tool
itself.

Upload
Learning Object
The Tool will create a packaged interchange
file in the form of a zipped folder. Login to the DLNET
website and upload the package.

COPYRIGHTS
The
National Science Digital Library is currently developing the business
model and intellectual property rights management system for addressing
the issue. Once implemented, these models will enable contributors,
i.e., authors and publishers, to be rightfully acknowledged and
compensated for their work. Pending
implementation of NSDL's rights management model, DLNET will
be able to accept your submission provided it is free and has no
copyright restrictions when used for personal and standard educational
purposes. DLNET will retain the right to archive, index and
distribute the metadata. Users will be requested to use the resources
as is, i.e., with metadata included so as to acknowledge authorship
and ownership of the content.

SUBMITTING
A URL LINK TO A LEARNING RESOURCE
If you want to link a learning resource on your website to DLNET,
you will be required to complete and submit a URL
Submission Form. The online form is designed to collect basic
information or metadata about your learning resource.
